The Dreamcatcher Project: Autodesk Announces Next-Gen Design Platform

The globally composed team from Autodesk Research, which stems from one of the founding father companies of 3D design and engineering, Autodesk, Inc., has just created a new state-of-the-art design platform that is sure to revolutionize the way that 3D design is generated. The Autodesk Research team, which includes designers and engineers from San Francisco, Shanghai, and Toronto, presents the Dreamcatcher system, an experimental design platform that is geared toward helping users with the generation of their 3D projects.

The Dreamcatcher platform begins with a designer’s inputted project objective, which includes information such as material type, functional requirements, performance restrictions, cost restrictions, and more. After this information is submitted into Dreamcatcher, it is processed within the design platform to self-generate a synthesized design space to comply with the particular requirements of the project. Once Dreamcatcher evaluates its self-generated solutions, the designer is then able to go in and reconfigure the design solution if the outcome is not quite exactly what they were aiming for.
The capabilities of Dreamcatcher are so amazingly vast, in large part due to the implementation of machine-learning in the platform. This programming technique prompts Dreamcatcher to search through a classified index of 3D design constraints and functions, in turn finding a pre-existing solution similar to the user’s design problems and creating a personalized design space that is compliant with what each individual design requires for functionality and production. Using a pattern-based solution method, Dreamcatcher is able to expand itself in both the quality and quantity of their self-generated design solutions.
The team is also in the midst of developing and testing with shape synthesis, too, which will grant Dreamcatcher with geometric representations that will optimize the complexity of shapes, analysis speed, and the accuracy of the generated simulation. Regardless of the complexity or size of the design, Dreamcatcher will present an abundant amount of solutions and strategies to prospective designers, which they are able to freely modify and edit once the solution is implemented into the design problem. The design team is currently working with leaders from the automotive, aerospace, and other manufacturing industries to provide solutions to 3D designs most complex problems and constraints. All in all, Autodesk Research has helped give way to a one-of-a-kind program that is not only able to teach designers how to optimize their 3D models, but is also able to teach itself solutions through machine-learning too. This cutting-edge making Dreamcatcher a design platform that will continue to improve itself while simultaneously improving user designs.
