Phoenix-based Local Motors has announced the winner of its most recent design challenge, which will be used as the basis of the company’s upcoming production line of 3D-printed cars. The winning design of Project [REDACTED] is Reload Redacted – Swim/Sport by Kevin Lo, a concept that allows multiple body type options to be placed on top of a single frame. This design maximizes the driver’s ability to customize his or her own ride, which is a key tenet of this edgy microfactory-based car maker.
Lo’s winning design offers two different and customizable takes on body design, built on a single chassis composed of 3D-printed components. The Swim and Sport models can each seat up to four and are designed to be used with a convertible soft top. The Swim model is a funky buggy that features outward-facing speakers for tailgating and beach-going entertainment. The Sport model has a sleeker body shape which resembles a more familiar sportscar. Lo’s design was the winner in a pool of 62 entries, which were judged by industry professionals and car buffs like Jay Leno. Details of the winning design are posted on Local Motors’ website here so you can check them out for yourself.
Last year, Local Motors made headlines with its 3D-printed electric powertrain vehicle called Strati. That car’s design came out of a similar contest after several hundred competitors submitted their interpretation of the ideal 3D-printed vehicle. The Strati’s 3D-printed parts took just 44 hours to print and assemble last fall. There’s no word on when or how one can get a 3D-printed Local Motors car of their own to drive, but we’ll be ready to share the updates on this and other 3D-printed microfactory built cars as soon as it breaks.
