Corvette Z06
Chevrolet has a pretty impressive bevvy of electric cars in the Volt, Spark and soon to be released Bolt, but the company hasn’t yet delved into high performance luxury EVs—and it doesn’t look as though it’s about to any time soon. Maryland-based Genovation, however, has announced they are working on an all-electric Corvette—called the GXE—that will be ready at the end of July, and they are hoping the car will set some new records for street legal electric cars.

There aren’t any pictures of the GXE—we hope they’ll be available in a couple of weeks—though for now we do know that the electric ‘Vette will be based on the 2006 Z06, and could set a new speed record for street legal EVs. As Genovation CEO Andrew Saul explained: “We are using state of the art inverters, batteries and electric motors that will produce in excess of 700-hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. We expect the car to achieve 0-60 mph in around three seconds and have a top speed of over 200 mph.”
Additionally, the car will have a range of 150 miles during normal driving operation and will have a near 50/50 weight distribution while being optimized for a low center of gravity. The undoubtedly ambitious project is benefiting from the expertise of an MIT electrical engineer and a mechanical engineer from Cosworth. Once the prototype vehicle is ready, it will be tested on a number of racetracks in an effort to set a new speed record.
As for the public debut, the GXE is set to be unveiled at the Electric Vehicle Technology Expo in Michigan in mid-September.
